Eugene (Gene) Hwang, MD, is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Children’s National Hospital/GW School of Medicine in Washington, DC, where he serves as the Associate Chief of Oncology, the William Seamus Hughes Professor of Neuro-oncology and Immunology, and the Vice Chair of the Brain Tumor Institute.

Dr. Hwang expands on his role as a pediatric neuro-oncologist with a heavy presence in multiple early phase clinical trial consortia, serving on the steering committees of CNS Children’s Oncology Group, the Collaborative Network for Neuro-oncology Clinical Trials (CONNECT), the CNS National Pediatric Cancer Foundation (NPCF), and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium (PBTC); he also co-leads the Ependymoma Working Group in the Pacific Pediatric Neuro-oncology Consortium (PNOC) and the Immunotherapy Working Groups in CONNECT and PBTC.  Dr. Hwang has led or co-led multiple early phase clinical trials, primarily revolving around immunotherapeutic or targeted therapy interventions, and serves on multiple Scientific Advisory Committees and Data Safety Monitoring Boards, while also publishing more than 60 articles and book chapters. 

Dr. Hwang completed his medical school training at Duke University, followed by a pediatrics residency at Brown University/Hasbro Children’s, and subsequently both Pediatric Hematology-Oncology and Neuro-oncology fellowships at Duke.   He remains committed to mentorship and education, serving as a mentor in the COG Young Investigators Committee and the Director of the CNH Pediatric Neuro-oncology Fellowship Program.

During the above efforts, Dr. Hwang has remained passionate and committed to his patients which are the primary focus of his work, serving on multiple foundation boards and working closely with families and scientists to advance care, together.
