SNO mourns the loss of John Ohlfest, PhD
The Society for Neuro-Oncology is saddened to report the untimely death of one of its members, John Ohlfest Ph.D., from melanoma. John was a promising young investigator who, in his short career, had already made multiple contributions to the field of neuro-oncology. Known for his endless ambition and creative thinking, John designed new treatments for human and canine brain cancers, some of which are currently undergoing clinical trial. Having finished his graduate studies in only 3 years, John joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota in 2005 in the departments of Neurosurgery and Pediatrics, and in 2010, he was awarded a McKnight Land-Grant Professorship. In 2012, he was named as the inaugural holder of the Hedberg Family/Children's Cancer Research Fund Chair in Brain Tumor Research.
John is survived by his wife, Karen, daughter, Grace, and son, Lucas. His passion, influence and contributions to brain cancer research were inspirational to his many colleagues and friends. The Ohlfest Memorial Education Fund has been established to provide for the education of John’s children. Donations can be made to this fund at any Wells Fargo location or by mailing a donation to: Ohlfest Memorial Education Fund, PO Box 131477, Roseville, MN 55113.
