ASTRO Spring Refresher Course

New and practicing radiation oncologists are expected by the American Board of Radiology to maintain core medical knowledge fundamental to the practice of radiation oncology. The ASTRO Spring Refresher Course is designed to update the practicing radiation oncologist, radiation physicist, radiation biologist and resident-in-training by reviewing specific topics covered on the board examination. It also provides an overview refresher on the disease sites and safety issues most commonly encountered in the practice of radiation oncology.

Meeting Program
This program is designed to increase competence through didactic lectures in the following core areas: breast, central nervous system, gastrointestinal, genitourinary/prostate, gynecologic, head and neck, lung and pediatric cancers, as well as the management of lymphoma and sarcomas. The program will also highlight specific areas in radiation biology that will help prepare residents for their board examinations and provide basic information to practicing radiation oncologists interested in the biological effects of exposure to ionizing radiation. The objective is to provide attendees with up-to-date overviews of rapidly changing areas in the radiation sciences that may impact radiation therapy.

Program Objectives
ASTRO's Spring Refresher Course has a long-standing tradition of providing a review of standard practices as well as state-of-the-art updates in technology and research. The objective of the program is to provide attendees with the current management of malignancies most encountered within radiation oncology. At the end of this educational intervention, attendees should be able to:
- Successfully implement the information provided in daily practice applications.
- Successfully use the information provided in preparation for board examinations.
- Summarize safety issues in a radiation oncology practice in the current era of multimodal imaging and complex treatment implementation.

Target Audience
The meeting is designed to meet the interests of practicing radiation oncologists, radiation oncology residents, radiation physicists, radiation biologists and all other health professionals involved in the field of radiation oncology.
