SNO Wilkins-Barrick International Neuro-Oncology Symposia

The Society for Neuro-Oncology is pleased to support neuro-oncology symposiums and educational courses in the developing world to bring much needed information and resources that assist local clinicians and researchers as they serve their diverse patient populations.  Introduced in 2015 by Dr. Gelareh Zadeh, past chair of the SNO International Outreach Committee, this initiative is  generously supported by Dr. Mark Bernstein, the Greg Wilkins-Barrick Chair at the University Health Network, University of Toronto, and the SNO Foundation.

The inaugural course was held in 2015 in Malaysia, with Prof. Dato Jafri Malin Datuk Abdullah and Dr. Regunath Kandasamy serving as chairs. Click here for their brief summary. Two courses were held in 2016; the first, in Morocco, was chaired by Dr. Laila Hsn and hosted by the Moroccan Society of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology. Click here to read more. The second course was held in Sri Lanka and was chaired by Dr. Ruvini Abeygunaratne. Thanks to the support of the SNO Wilkins-Barrick Initiative, funding for the 2018 course in Nigeria marked the start of the Society for Neuro-Oncology Sub-Saharan Africa (SNOSSA). At the conclusion of the course, SNOSSA leadership was installed and a formal constitution was adopted. Click here to read more on the results of the 2018 course.

The 2019 course is set for Capetown, South Africa as focus continues on this critical region of need.

SNO thanks Drs. Gelareh Zadeh and Dr. Mark Bernstein, Greg Wilkins-Barrick Chair in International Neurosurgery at the University of Toronto for their continued efforts in advancing neuro-oncology in the developing world.
