Dr. Barnholtz-Sloan, PhD, is a multi-disciplinary researcher trained in biostatistics, population genetics, and human genetics. As an integral biostatistician and epidemiological co-investigator, she enables the success of multiple cross-disciplinary cancer research projects, including mentoring of trainees, seeking to unravel the complexities of cancer. Her contributions to cancer research have led to major advances in the identification of genetic risk factors and biomarkers that are significantly improving diagnostics, treatment and management of brain and central nervous system (CNS) tumors (including TCGA, CPTAC and others). In addition, she is the Scientific co-PI for the Central Brain Tumor Registry of the United States (CBTRUS). The use of the CBTRUS data has allowed for many recent important discoveries related to incidence, incidence trends and survival for brain and CNS tumors. Her most recent scientific work focuses on working to unravel the molecular mechanisms behind known sex differences in brain tumors. Internationally, she was a founding board member of the Brain Tumor Epidemiology Consortium (BTEC) in 2003. From 2010 to 2014, she served as the elected Co-Vice President and the elected Co-President to BTEC, and helped the consortium transitioned to become a non-profit entity, and published three landmark review papers in brain tumor epidemiology.
Dr. Barnholtz-Sloan is the Associate Director for Informatics and Data Science (IDS) Program in the NCI Center for Biomedical Informatics and Information Technology (CBIIT)* where she helps lead efforts at CBIIT to shape data science strategies and to foster collaboration within NCI and across NIH and the cancer research community. In addition, she continues to be actively involved in research, continuing to investigate descriptive epidemiology and etiology of brain tumors as a Senior Investigator in NCI’s Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG), Trans-Divisional Research Program (TDRP)*. *Dr. Barnholtz-Sloan is serving SNO as elected Secretary/Treasurer in a personal capacity.
